September TNG - Rt Hon Norman Lamb MP on 'The Lessons of Cannabis in Canada'

Following the summer break, the Adam Smith Institute will open its doors once again on 3rd September to enjoy some policy chat over a few glasses of wine.

This September we are delighted to once again welcome the Rt Hon Norman Lamb MP to ASI HQ. Norman has been the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk since 2001. As Health Minister in the Coalition Government, Norman worked to reform the care system and led the drive to integrate health and social care. He also challenged the NHS to ensure that mental health was treated with the same priority as physical health. He was elected Chair of the Science & Technology Select Committee in July 2017, where his work on e-cigarette policy is playing a vital role in tobacco harm reduction. He has also consistently championed legalising and regulating cannabis as a way to protect young people, cut crime, and deliver social justice for those affected by criminalisation.

As well as his many achievements in the world of politics, Norman is also well-known for kickstarting the career of Tinchy Stryder and gaining the endorsement of Dappy from N-Dubz when running for Lib Dem leader in 2015. Nice.

He will be speaking on "The Lessons of Cannabis in Canada" following his visit to Canada with a cross-party group of MPs earlier this year, which was chronicled by the BBC and released as a short documentary.

A bit more about these meetings:

The Next Generation events (or TNGs as we like to call them) are aimed at creating a network of young people (under 30s) interested in ideas that are shaping our world. They’ve been going for as long as the ASI has, and have been attended by people who went on to become Cabinet Ministers, Prime Ministers, Editors, and CEOs. The Tory and Labour spinner who dated on The Thick of It met at a TNG, according to an old BBC backstory document. So whatever your politics, we just like interesting ideas and we hope you do too. It’s for under 30s, it’s informal, it includes free wine and we normally end up at the Marquis of Granby afterwards.
